How to get the best from your swimming pool in a drought

February 21, 2012 by admin

If you have been watching the news over the past few weeks can cannot help but notice the stories about the shortage of water and droughts. We are only in February and water suppliers are talking about turning off the tap whilst brushing our teeth and hose pipe restrictions.

So with the south east of England is now officially in a state of drought we better look into ways of making our swimming pools as efficient as possible.

The first step would be to ensure your swimming pool is not leaking. This may seem obvious but a lot of swimming pools are wasting thousands of gallons of water each year with leaks. The most common areas within swimming pools for leaks are cracked above/underground pipes, damaged filters, under water lights or leaks in the swimming pools structure/lining. Deep End Pools can help you to identify and fix all of the above very quickly and efficiently using the last technologies.

Once you have stopped your swimming pool from losing water of its own accord your next focus is to minimise the amount of water wasted in backwashing, draining the pool due to clarify issues and evaporation.

Backwashing is the process of pumping water through the sand filter backwards to remove all of the trapped sediment from the sand and washing it way down the drain.  This is required on most swimming pools as sand filter are commonplace in almost every plantroom.

There are however new water saving filtration devices that will eliminate the need for wasteful backwashing. This new devices still require cleaning but use a fraction of the water to do so.  A cartridge filter has a filter or element that is made of paper or microban material. Not only does it offer water saving filtration but it quite often offers better filtration levels than that of a traditional sand filter.

Along side the cartridge filtration we often install Multi-Cyclone pre filters. These work on the same principle as that of a famous bag-less vacuum cleaner – Cyclone Technology.  The water is forced to spin at a very fast rate through the tank of the unit and the very fast spinning forces out any medium / large sediment that has got through the swimming pool pumps pre strainer basket. The trapped sediment then sits in a vessel until you simply open a hand valve to realise the trapped sediment and a small amount of water. There are combined Multi Cyclone and Cartridge filter devices that are both in one sophisticated unit to take up minimum space in your plantroom and offer maximum water saving potential.

The above equipment can be installed in a single day and you will start to see the changes immediately. Deep End Pools have been using cartridge filters and multi-cyclone units for many years with great success and great feedback.

Good water chemistry and regular servicing also helps to save water. Almost any level of algae out break can be controlled with correct addition of chemicals combined with good regular cleaning of the pool. You should do as much as possible to ensure you do not have to dump large amounts of water due to poor swimming pool maintenance and water chemistry.

The above leak repairs and filtration upgrades combined with a good quality swimming pool cover that offers maximum prevention of evaporation should really make a significant difference to your water consumption this year as some rivers and groundwater levels are lower than during the drought of 1976 we should all do as much as possible to help.

When should I open my swimming pool?

February 20, 2012 by admin

With the first signs of spring on its way and the days getting longer and a little less bleak it will very soon be time to prepare your swimming pool for the swimming pool season.

Deep End Pools of Holtspur, Beaconsfield have been helping people with opening swimming pools for well over 10 years. The first switch on of the system and initial clean up of the swimming pool can dictate to whether the swimming pool will be ready to swimming in a matter of days or in fact over a period of weeks.

Many factors come into account to making sure your swimming pool is ready for this spring / summer the first of which is to ensure that you have had good winter maintenance of your pool. If you have just thrown your winter debris cover over the swimming pool then you are not putting yourself in the best starting position.

Winter Call Backs are a massive help. They are regular service checks to your pool over the very cold and wet winter months. The service visits maintain a safe water level, clean the pool, inspect the pool equipment and top up the swimming pools winter chemicals.

The time of year you choose to open your swimming pool makes a big difference in the amount of time taken to get the swimming pool back into full working order. If you leave your pool until the middle of the warm summer months the pool has a much bigger chance of getting large algae problems, this again will lead to longer preparation times leading into the swimming pool season.

The way you go about your open can also dictate the time it takes to get your swimming pool back into correct swimming conditions. If you do not use the correct amount of the required chemicals then you can either just put a drop into the ocean and have little to no effect on the swimming pools condition or you can overdose the swimming pool which can lead to days or even weeks of waiting for the high levels to drop or add costly neutralising and reducing chemicals.

There are obviously many variable factors and a level of pool water chemistry required to ensure that you get maximum usage and benefit from your swimming pool this summer. So if you do it yourself ensure to keep up regular and detailed services and records.

If you have many other things to be dealing with and the swimming pool is another point on your already busy schedule why not take the stress away and arrange for Deep End Pools to maintain your swimming pool through the Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter so that you can get maximum usage from your pool with minimum effort on your part and then all you have to worry about is making one phone call.

Deep End Pools Berkshire – Update

February 2, 2012 by admin

Deep End Pools, Taplow Berkshire between Maidenhead, Berkshire and Windsor, Berkshire has been an established swimming pool shop for some 20 years.

Deep End Pools have been in residence of The Bishop Centre, Taplow for almost 4 years and it has been the ideal location for Deep End Pools, Berkshire customers to conveniently buy there swimming pool equipment, swimming pool chemicals and swimming pool advice.

However in the summer of 2011 Deep End Pools were informed that planning applications had been put forward to develop the Bishop Centre Shopping Village into a 131,500 sq. ft. new modern purpose-built retail park, including a new Tesco supermarket with sustainable design features and measures to improve energy efficiency of the entire centre.

Deep End Pools and other shops on the site had been given until the end of January 2012 to leave the Bishop Centre site.

However on December 29 2011 a South Bucks District Council spokesman confirmed the application is now expected to be considered for development in February 2012, by which time it hopes to have ‘further information from the agent to assist us in the assessment of the application.’

One of the main objections being put forward by Taplow parish councillors are “Concerns over traffic and parking estimations for the site” and as such South Bucks District Council is waiting to receive the views of its highway consultant before making any further decisions.

“It is unlikely that we will be in a position to report the application to the January committee. It could be reported to the February 15 committee, but it would be dependent on whether we have all the information we need,” said the report by South Bucks District Council.

As of December 2011 more than 100 letters of objection were received over plans for the new Bishop Centre on the Bath Road centre, which has about 30 existing shops and no letters supporting the redevelopment of the centre.

Deep End Pools, Taplow, Berkshire will be aiming to move in March / April 2012.  Deep End Pools will be based as always in Deep End Pools, Holtspur, Beaconsfield. If you are one of our much-appreciated Deep End Pools Taplow showroom you will still be able to get all of the great service and equipment in our flagship Deep End Pools Beaconsfield Showroom.

Easter Bunny Boiler, Certikin Style.

March 19, 2011 by admin

Are you looking forward to firing up your swimming_pool_heater in the forthcoming weeks? Well one certain little bunny rabbit in Burchett’s Green Berkshire, had certainly been looking forward to an early heating this spring!!

Easter Bunny Boiler

This image if you look closely had been sent to the office by one of our Senior Swimming_Pool_Engineers today, look closely within the plant room winter debris and you will see a very small Bunny Rabbit! This little fury ball of fun had nestled itself within the casings of a Certikin Oil Fired Swimming Pool boiler.

It was at this stage we had the dilemma, clearly the Rabbit had made this lovely little swimming pool plant room his or her home for the winter months, our query was this 1. Should we fire up the boiler? 2. Or let nature take its cause leave the boiler off for a few more weeks until the ambient air temperature rises and the Bunny looks for a new home?

Our client choose to take the informed choice of allowing nature to take its course at allowing the Rabbit a few more weeks rent free stay! However our client did actually ask the bunny very nicely could he/she re-locate by Easter as a pool party had been planned…. we eagerly awaited a response……. we had the feeling we could have been there some time, so we left bunny alone.

Robert Coombs, Director of Deep End Pools said :

I’ve had some strange requests in the past years, but never have I been asked to evict a rabbit from an Certikin Oil fired boiler

Our senior swimming pool engineer was very well commended for his efforts in spotting the bunny, as if he had not noticed we could of have one very HOT CROSS BUNNY on our hands!

*On a serious note, Deep End Pools carry out many Swimming_Pool_open_services and certainly our biggest fear factor with swimming pool heating systems that lay idle for many months, is normally lint and dust ingress causing inefficient boilers that can lead to break down and damage however, over neglected systems can result in Damage, Fire, and Costly Repairs we always advise that swimming pool systems are serviced annually regardless of use let this be a warning. Book in your pool_boiler_service.
